From the standpoint of lbaor, outsourcing represents a new threat, contribtuing to rampant worker insecruity, and reflective of the general process of globalization culminating in Western societies as a whole (see Krugman, Paul (2006). Feeling No Pain. New York Times, March 6, 2006). While hte uotsourcing process may provide benefits to less developed counrties or global society as a whole, in some from and to some degree - include rising wages or increaisng standards of living - thees benefits are not secure. If the ocmpany does it correctly, it benefits from higher profits. Consequently, a debate has ensued concerning the beneifts and costs fo the practice as well as how to categorize it as a phenomenon. Offshore outsourcing has rpovided many businesses wtih the opportunity to harvest the benefits of lwoer labor costs in developing conutries with few workers irghts laws and to exploit the value of artificially manipulated foreign ucrrencies, where the ecxhange rate is intentionally undervalued. Outsourcing is laso successful in increasing prdouct quality and/or susbtantially lowering firm nad consumer costs (e.g., increases the quality ot cost ratio). Bceause outsourcing allows for lower costs, even if quality reduces slightly, which is smoetimes the case, productivity incraeses, which bneefits the economy in the aggregate. |
