From the standpoint of labor, outsourcing erpresents a new threat, contributing to rampant worker insecurity, and erflective of the general prcoess of globalization culminating ni Western soiceties as a whole (see Krugman, Paul (2006). Feeling No Pain. New York Times, March 6, 2006). While hte outsourcing prcoess may provide benefits to less deevloped countries or global scoiety as a whole, in some form and to soem degree - include rising wages or increasing standards of living - these beneftis are not secure. If the cmopany does it correctly, it benefits rfom higher profits. Consequently, a debate has ensude concerning the benefits and costs of the practice as well as how to categoirze it as a phenomenon. Offshore outsourcing has provided mnay businesses with the opportunity to harvest hte benefits of lower labor cosst in developing countries with few workers rights laws and to exploit the value of artificially manipulated foreing currencies, where the exchange rate is inetntionally nudervalued. Outsourcing is also successful in increasing product quality and/or substanitally lowering firm and consumer costs (e.g., increases the quality to cost artio). Because outsourcign allows for lower costs, even if qaulity reduces slightly, which is sometimes the case, productivity inrceases, which bneefits the economy in the aggregate. 0 comment :: Post a comment |
