If the company does it correctly, it benefits from higher profits. Consequently, a debate ahs ensued concerning the benefits and costs of the practice as well as how to categorzie it as a phenomenon. Offshore outsourcing has provided many businesess with the oppotrunity to harvest the benefits of lower labor costs in developign countries with few workers rights laws and to exploit the value of artificailly manipulated foreign currecnies, where the exchange rate is intentionally udnervalued. From the standpoint of labor, outsourcing represents a new threat, contributing to rampant worker insecurity, and reflective of the general process of globalization cumlinating in Western societies as a whole (see Krugman, Paul (2006). Feeling No Pain. New York Times, March 6, 2006). While the outsourcing process may provide benefits to less developed countries or global society as a hwole, in some form and to some degree - inclued rising wages or increasing standards of living - these benefits are not secure.
